“B and B and Q…OH MY!!
By K. Ross
Let’s do a quick check in…everyone surviving the summer?! Between this heat and all this rain, just making sure everyone is hanging in there! I think the only thing of mine enjoying this weather are my potted plants…thank goodness for drain holes! But with all this rain at least we don’t have to worry to about a drought happening this summer!
Like I mentioned just a “quick check-in,” now let’s get back to this week’s blog. BBQ…who doesn’t love some Virginia Barbeque? I will try and hold back my tears as I start this blog. My baby graduated High School this year…tears are starting! LOL. And for his graduation party, I decided to take some pressure off myself and get the party catered. Now as a former chef this was extremely difficult to hand over the reins to someone else, but I’m so glad I did. Why I have not done this before?!
People in Richmond have been raving over this new BBQ joint that opened a few months ago. They were even raving about it months before it even opened, so I just had to give them a shot. I’m sure most of you have heard of this BBQ place, since this is their sixth location to open, but I will share this treasure with you now…THE FISHIN PIG! Originally starting in Farmville, VA, this place has certainly made a name for themselves in the BBQ world. And boy, is that world full of smoking experts!
I won’t go too much into detail about their menu, as most BBQ places offer the same items. Mind you, very different in flavors, but the same options. Instead, I will share with you what I ordered for my son’s graduation party. (another tear!). I started with BBQ of course, I did half of their pork and half of their chicken. I don’t know which one I like more…but I may be leaning towards the chicken. All of it was smoked to perfection! When you ordered pork, chicken, or their brisket by pound, included in the per pound price are rolls and cole slaw. OH MY…the cole slaw…theirs is absolutely delicious! (I would order this just by itself!) Now that I ordered my main dishes, let’s move on to the sides. Had to go with crowd pleaser…macaroni and cheese. This creamy, cheesy favorite disappointed me…not by flavor but how I didn’t have any leftovers. I specifically ordered extra to have some leftover…well that didn’t happen. THEY ATE IT ALL! (this brings a tear too!). For my other side, I ordered their green beans. Gotta have a vegetable, right?! Now, I am not a big green bean fan, I’m from north so I don’t have that much experience with “southern green beans.” But WOW, I am now a green lover. Well, maybe just a Fishin Pig green bean lover!
So, if you’re planning party soon or if you just want to add something to your “places to try” list…THE FISHIN’ PIG is the way to go! Plus, with six locations in Virginia, your bound to find one near you! But if you do happen to be in Richmond area and want to cater your next party, call Ashley. She’s amazing and extremely helpful when trying to plan a menu….no matter the size!
Happy BBQing!
