A Rainy Day at the Beach!

A Rainy Day at the Beach!

By K. Ross

OMG…this heat!  How is everyone holding up?  I keep hoping with every storm that passes that a cooler day is on the horizon. And I’m still waiting and waiting…

The only good remedy for these hot, hot days…is a day at the beach!  This brings me to this week’s blog.

Every summer my family will get together to spend a week at the beach.  We usually travel to Outer Banks, but lately we have been over the drive and THE TRAFFIC. So, for past three years we decided to cut our drive in half and head to Virginia Beach.  With that said, the past years that we have been going to VA Beach, it has rained and rained. Last year, we even got caught in the hurricane aftermath…wind, rip currents, red flags. UGH!

As we start packing up for this year’s trip, it had me thinking, what should I bring in case it rains.  Traveling with children is a bit of struggle, but trying to entertain these kiddos when we can’t have a beach day is in even bigger struggle.  This brings me to the big question…” What can we do when we have a rainy day at beach?”

Before I start asking for some advice, I want to share a couple of things that we have done in the past to the most out of our “rainy day.”  Our first family friendly place is the Beachside Social!  This is the place to be when you need take cover!  The atmosphere as soon as you walk in is so vibrant and entertaining!  It has all the games that you would normally play on the beach, but the added bonus on being inside when the weather is cooperating!  My personal favorite is shuffle board!  I don’t many places that have this game anymore, but when it rains my boys ask…” can we go play shuffle board?” (This warms my heart!). And parents remember you’re on vacation too, so enjoy a beer from their large craft selection!

Our next is…no it’s the not the aquarium (we all know how great the aquarium is!) it’s a trip to iFly.  This may not be the best for families with younger children, but my boys are teenagers (don’t you remember my tears from the last blog…one of my boys just graduated high school!)

Back to iFly!  I am one who has always wanted to try skydiving, but unfortunately, I have big fear of flying. Why would I go up in plane if I wasn’t traveling to some place amazing? But this place allows me to check off one my bucket list to do’s and I don’t even have to go in a plane!  Now, I can’t compare to the real thing, but my boys and I had the most amazing experience! They have already to go again this year…in case it rains!

Now that I have shared a couple ideas, what do you suggest?  What is your family go-to when you have a rainy day at the beach?  Do you have any family games you play?  Please share, I would love to hear what people do “when you have a rainy day at the beach!”

And now for my final thought…STAY COOL and STAY HYDRATED!  We will get through this heat!
