Sammy Hager…the cat

Sammy Hager…the cat

One time, I was at Shoney’s (which closed about a year and a half ago) eating breakfast alone because I enjoy my own company. The waitress started talking to me, and we found out we had a lot in common—we both love cats.

She told me she had adopted a feral cat, but she couldn’t bring him inside because he sprayed everywhere. He hadn’t been fixed, and she didn’t have the money for the surgery. I asked his name. “Sammy Hagar,” she said. I almost fell out laughing—it was so cute.

For her tip, I gave her $25 on a $9 breakfast and told her to put the extra toward her Sammy Hagar fund. I asked how much the vet would charge. She said $125, and she was trying to save money but it was hard, especially with winter coming. I told her I understood.

After breakfast, I went across the street to do some grocery shopping. While thinking about it, I went to an ATM and took out $100 cash. I went back to Shoney’s, gave it to her, and said, “This is for Sammy Hagar.”

She started crying—she was so overwhelmed. I told her it was nothing; he needed to be fixed so he could have a home for the winter. She took my phone number, and the next day she sent me a picture of Sammy Hagar at the vet.

Sammy Hagar got his surgery and finally had a forever home inside a house.
